KEEP YOU PYTHON HAPPY AND STRONG!

You will want to keep your ball python strong and happy, and a great way of doing this is to let your python take a swim.I dont mean in a lake or ocean because i doubt the python would come back lol.i mean in the bath tub or a kiddy pool.make sure the wheater is warm because the snake perfers warm water even when its hot out side.it will be good excersize for your ball python and you get a chuckle when you see it wiggleing around swimming.well t/c and remember, reptiles need love too!

Turtle Talk

AS most of you know im a big snake fan(especially the ball python.)but i like most animals in general.Ialso think that turlts can be good starter reptile pets also. But like all pets turtles do need some specialized care so make sure you do a little research first to make sure its the right pet for you.Turtles, along with tortoises, terrapins(chelonians)are the oldest of all the reptiles. They date back more than 220 million years(around the time of the first dinosaurs!).There are more than 300 species of chelonians rangeing from small to extremely large! The largest of the turtles is the green sea turtle.NO other animal has a body armor like the turtle,it can it serves as protection from both elements of nature and predators. If the turles shell is damaged it can regrow. It supports the the soft muscles and organs.Turtles come in all shapes and sizes and some turles can be very strange looking. Now if you do want a turle as a pet be carefull of wich breed you decide on because some turles such as the snapping can give you a nasty bite!.Turles can be either herbivores (plant eaters)or carnivors(meat eaters)Many turtles change their diets as they age.and depending wich turtle you decide on as a pet the envirment they need can very different from one species to the next(so do your research befor you buy).Well thats all for now ,and remember reptiles need love too!:).

Albino Ball Python!

Today i went to a python breeder and saw an Albino Ball Python and all i can say is wow what an awesome snake!Ihis albino ball python was about 3 and half feet long with pale white scales (almost a yellowish)and a light orange pattern and red pierceing eyes that seem to look right threw you.If i didnt already own 2 ball pythons i would have definately purchased this albino ball python. Not only was it a beautiful snake,..it would have scared the dickens out of my ex wife(hahahaha!)but my 4 year daughter would have loved it!This snake wasnt cheap thought, over 1000 dollars !But i must say i really did want this snake lol.As i was looking at this albino ball python it sat up and stared right at me and flick its tongue out tasteing the air around it and it almost seemed to know i that i was infatuated with it, we booth sat thier stareing at each other and the silence was broken when the owner said "it seems to know you"after i left this breeders place of business i couldnt help feeling i was leaveing a friend behind.i know that sounds strange, guess you will just have to go a snake breeder who has a albino ball python for sale or displayed and look it in those red eyes and see for yourself what i mean.

SHEDDING PROBLEMS

As long as your providing a good environment for your snake and it's eating, it will also be expelling waste and shedding. The processes of shedding, ( sloughing) usually take about 7 to 10 days to complete. You'll first notice that your Ball Python's belly is getting a pink color. Hydration is the key in preventing shed problems.A water dish should always be in the enclosure or cage and the water should be changed often.( i usally use spring water or distilled water)You may want to try misting the enclosure you keep your pet snake in. Young snake that's growing may shed and defecate as often as every four to six weeks
Always check the shed skin, which has hopefully come off in one full piece, to make sure the eyecaps and tail tip have been shed Some snakes will always have problems shedding, usaully due to a dry climate. If the eye caps did not shed off, your snakes eyes one or both eyes, will have a foggy look to them.To get those last few bits of skin off, you can try soaking your pet snake in a luke warm bath for a about an half hour. If you still have difficulty removing the brille(eye skin), or if there are multiple eyecaps on top of each other, see a veterinarian for treatment. Parasite sometimes cause a bad shed cycle.IF you belive your snake has parasites you should consult a Veterinary that has experience with reptiles

A 4 Year Old Girl And Her Python!

Anyone who knows me or my blog knows im a huge fan of the ball python.now dont get me wrong,i love all reptiles and animals. But thanks to my daughter ball pythons hold a special place in my heart. My daughters ball python seems so at ease with her i am pleasently suprised.when shes holding it will strech out completly. It laps at her with its little tounge(this is how the snake identifies your scent)i was actually amazed when it slithered out of my hands ,across the bed then slithered up my daughters arm ,across her shoulders ,threw her hair ,then rested comfortabley on her head .I sat and watched in amazement one thursday morning as she was painting her toe nails(yes at 4 years old she paints her toe nails)and the snake sat in her lap and its head resting on her thigh.Ithink ball pythons are a great starter reptile. Its docile nature and it seems to adapt well to being handled(even by a four year old)i know alot of people thought i was crazy for getting my daughter a snake for xmas ,but it was what she wanted.and it help me find a love of the ball python. But i did research the snake first and thats how i came to the relization that a ball python is actually a great pet to have.but remember snakes and all pets are a major comitment.so dont go into it on a whim. Research it well and understand that there is alot of specialized care in owning a pet snake or any pet excludeing a pet rocklol.Remember snakes need love too!

The Green Anaconda!

The Green Anaconda is actually one of four species of boa Constrictors. The green Anaconda lurks in swamps and slow moving rivers.where it lies in wait for its prey where it crushs it prey with its strong coils!.They can weigh up to 500 pounds. The Anaconda is a very large snake and can present a danger if you dont know what your doing. If you want a large snake but you new to owning a snake as a pet,try a corn snakes, king snakes, or my favorite the ball python.(red tail boas are pretty cool too) all get to be a good size ,but still mangeable and are fairly easy to handle. But you should do your research to decide wich one is best for you and how to best take care of your pet snake

Lizard Fun Facts!

There are nearly 4000 different types of lizards(species)Lizards first appeared between 100 to 150 million years ago.The Megalania priscus was a giant Austrilian monitor lizrd that reach a length of 23 feet and weighed more than a half a ton. They died off about 25000 years ago.And to clear up any arguments about what is biggest lizard, the komodo dragon is heaviest and the Montitor lizard from New Guinea is the longest at around 13 feet.(There are rumors of reports of a giant monitor lizard in australia that is claimed to have been sited at over 15 feet but we will leave that up to the cryptozoologist lol)and if you dont know cryptozoology is is the search for animals that are hypothesized to exist, but for which conclusive proof is missing. (legendary , mytrhical ,or presumed to be extinct today.)but we will leave cryptozoology to a different blog and stick with the facts here on this blog.

Venomous Lizards !

Did you know that there is only 2 types of lizards that are venomous? The Gila Monster and the Mexican Beaded Lizard ,(and be assured these should definately not to be kept as pets!).Both of these lizards are very colourful(natures way of giving a warning that these lizards are dangerous!)The Gila monster is a awesome looking lizard,it has a rounded head with large studlike scales, powerful bulging jaws(thats where its venom glands are located).and it has a large blue tongue. The Gila monster is a desert dweller and is found in the saguero cactus desert.
The Beaded lizard can be found in guatemala.,west Mexico and South Sonora. It has a longer tail and legs than the gila monster ,the beaded lizard is so named because of its beaded like skin and can reach up to 3 feet.though a ground deweller it can climb trees. And both lizards are carniverous(meat eaters).and remeber both these lizards can be very dangerous so stay clear of them.

More about Snake Care.

Cages must be kept clean because snakes can develope Dirty Cage Syndrome when droppings build up. Cages should be cleaned every week or two with a detergent and a disinfected make sure that the cage or aquarium is dry befor placeing the snake back in and make sure that you clean out all the disinfectant or it could harm your pet snake or reptile. Cages must be kept clean because snakes can develop Dirty Cage Syndrome when droppings build up.
I know i mentioned this befor, but i cant stress it enough.Next to you the veterinarian can be your snakes best friend(provided he knows about reptile care)so make sure you choose a veterinarian who has experience with reptiles. If your snake or pet reptile developes a infection it must be treated right away and may need to be treated with antibiotics(somes times it will just a topical ointment ,and sometimes it might take a injection of antibiotics. There are a host of ailments a pet snake aquire, but a lot can be prevented with regular cleaning of your pets enclosure

A Great Place to find Cages for Your Reptile!

A place to buy great cages for your pets(especially your pet reptiles:) ) is a site called CagesByDesign.com they have large and small enclosures designed specifically for reptiles, birds and small animals.I looked over some of the enclosures and i must say they look great!. A little About IGUANAS!

I know a few people who have owned Iguanas and they tend to be suprised that there is a lot of specialized care needed for iguanas.Alot of people seem to think you just let it walk around the house and feed it a couple of crickets now and then(movie balony)Iguanas are like any other lizard, they need specialized lighting and habitat. And most people dont relize iguanas are pretty big lizards.(they can reach up to six feet in length). And around 3 years old the male green iguana can become very agressive during breeding season, biting and the tail is used like a whip and can cause a a pretty good cut if it hits you.The females may die if they become eggbound(didnt mate dureing mateing season).dont buy a iguana ,or any other lizard just becuase it looks cool.do your rresearch first and see if its a pet you really want, and that you are able to take care of it.all pets require a commitment.lizards need care and love to!

The Most Deadliest Snake

Most experts say that the most venomous snake is the Sea Snake (Hydrophus Belcheri).ITS said to be 100x more venomous than any land snake!Another top five deadly snake is the Tiger Snake in Australia.(Notechis scutatus), Australian member of the cobra family. If you ever run into either of these deadly snakes ,BACK PEDDLE AS FAST AS YOU CAN! both of these will definately kill you if you are bitten.its said that the venom from the tiger snake contains both a blood clotting agent as well as a nerve paralyzer and is almost always fatal. And always remember that a venomous snake should only be handled by experts.

More About Pythons!

Anyone who has viewed my blog knows i consider they Ball Python the best pet snake to own.But some of you may not know there are many varients of patterns and coloured ball pythons. Some are very dark and in dark shadowy areas look almost black,.One of my favorite coloured python is the albino Ball Python!.it has yellow or orange type patterns on a nearly white background and pierceing red eyes..these are hard to find but are becomeing more common(but they are still pricey)one of the most unsaull coloured python is thepiebald Ball Pythonthese are hard to breed and no two are idenical but when you see one i think you will be impressed.they are a very different looking snake with very distinct patterns.an if your interested in adopting a reptile you should visit the Colorado Reptile Humane Society page.at

Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake !

EVEN though constrictor snakes are my favorite,(especially the ball python:) )im going to do a little on venomous snakes(poisonous)First of all ,if your not an expert on snake handleing, stay far away from venomous snakes.they are not to be fooled with.THEY CAN KILL YOU! Today im going to talk about the Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake inparticular for this blog. (Crotalus adamanteus) is the largest snake native to North America its territory ranges from South from the Carolinas and west to Louisiana. its length can reach up to 6 feet long. It has brown, black, and beige diamond marks on its back(thus the name). The Diamond backed rattle snake lives in forests near palmetto bushes. It makes its home in old animal burrows (holes in the ground that it confiscates from rodents that it has eaten or has found already vacated). It is a good swimmer and can live near fresh or salt water. The eastern diamondback does NOT always rattle before it strikes.
Rattlesnakes shed their skin several times a year, gaining one new rattle segment with each shed.when they reproduce they produce offspring in September they usaully have Eight to 12 venomous young(they have already have poison when they are born and will strike when threatened.. The young are on their own as there is no parental care.
rattle snakes and all venomous snakes should be avoided unless you absolutely know what you are doing.(but i still think they are very cool)

Boas, and Anacondas

Boa constrictors, reticulated pythons, and anacondas are some of the biggest snakes in the world. and people seem to confuse them with each other.(some people dont know wich is wich)
First of all the Anoconda is a species of boa, not a separate type of snake. So actually there 2 types of constrictor snakes containing sub species. The two types are boa constrictors, and pythons.
Constrictors kill there prey by wraping around it and basically suffocateing it.sliding menacingly through the trees. That’s probably because these big snakes make a big impressionprople tend to think of boas as evil and dangerious. But boas are usually pretty quiet and calm and don’t deserve their nasty reputation.they are non venomous and make fairly good pets.and wild boas usaully try to avoid people and other preditors.
Anocondas are four species of water boa constrictors.(they like to live in or near bodies of water or thick forest areas)
the green anoconda can reach a length of 30 feet and weigh up to 551 pounds!the anoconda is the largest snake in the world.
Anacondas bite their prey with their sharp teeth, hold on with their powerful jaws and pull them under water. or squeez thier prey it suffictes. they swallow thier prey whole .Thier jaws can cunhinge and the jaw bones are loosely connected to the skull so it can actually swallo prey much larger than thier own heads and mouth.
Like most snakes, the anoconda is precieved as a extremely dangerious, but it truth, like most snakes do not desreve their evil image.the tend to try to avoid humans. And just for the record, the longest snake on record is the Python reticulatus. The python holds the world's record for length of a snake, with the longest ever measured at 33 feet.
The heaviest snake species in the world is the Anaconda, wieghing in at about 551 pounds

PET CONSTRICTOR SNAKES

This morning i was playing with my daughters pet ball python(named tinker bell, lol that name allways cracks me up, a python named tinker bell:))and the more i played with it the more i relized... the ball python snake is absolutly the best constrictor snake to have as a pet if you have a child. The ball python was so docile and calm.IT has been handle so much by my daughter that it will actually slither toward her when i let it go. when she places on her shoulders it gentley touches her with its tounge(this is how it identifies her scent.and it just sat camly draped over shoulders not squeeezing or holding tight.and thier my daughter sat watching a barbie fairy dvd, a constrictor snake draped over her shoulders drinking chocolate milk and 2 dogs on the couch next to her hopeing to get a sip of the chocolate milk.the scene was very cute and humorus.this post has no real point just a funny scene involveing a snake lol.

THE KING LIZARD KOMODO DRAGON!

The Komodo dragon(Varanus komodoensis)today im going to go over the komodo dragon.
The komodo dragon grows to an average length of 6.5-10 feet and weighs up too 365 pounds.(komodo is the current king of the lizrdslol)
Komodo Dragons are a member of the monitor lizard family and only inhabit the islands of Komodo,
their visual discrimination is poorThey use their tongue to detect taste and smell ,and thier sense of smell is keen, and
may be able to detect carrion(a dead carcuss) up to 5 mile away
komodos are not venomous but thier saliva is filled with bacteria to the point of being highly poisenous.
Komodo Dragons are found exclusively in Indonesia, and the lesser sunda archipelago..
Komodo Dragons are very dangerous and are a endangered species(so dont even think about trying t own one unless you want to violate some federal laws and you just may become its dinner)komdo dragons eat just about any animal it can catch.(humans included)they way they hunt is to hide and wait and then ambush thier intened prey.even if the prey escapes ,the bite from the komodo is so deadly that the komodo dragon will just follow the prey until it dies from the infectious bite.komodo dragons will also eat dead carcusses.

North American Pine Snake

The northern pine snake(pituophis melaneucus ) is a
fairly large (48-68 inches. or 122-172
cm) black and dull white to yellowish
or light gray snake. These snakes have
blotches that are dark or brownish
. Pine snakes have keeledscales and a single anal plate. Knownfor their loud hiss, pine snakes aretypically perfer the ground and rarelyclimb trees. Since the pine snake is both secretive andfossorial, meaning it burrows underground, it can easily
go unseen or noticed.
Pine snakes require dry pine-oak forest t growing on very
infertile sandy soils such as Lakehurst or Lakewood sands.
The shy nature of this snake has lead to some degree of uncertainty about its
overall status in the northeastern United States. Indications seem to suggest that pine
snake abundance has dwindelled throughout its northeastern range,
New Jersey Pinelands may hold some of the largest populations of pine snakes in the
Northeast, but even there the species is at risk. ReptilesNCritters.com

Exotic Pets in Pet Stores

I have notice a trend among pet stores. They seem to neglect the more exotic pets such as reptiles.I'm not saying all pet stores just many of them do.It may due to the fact that many animal lovers seem to be a bit put off by the more exotic pets ,like snakes and lizards. But these exotic pets do need more specialized care than the comon pet like a cat or dog.snakes and lizards need a very specific inviorments, specialized houseing like cages ,aquariums, terrariums, and viewing tanks.(this includes other exotic pets like certain tropical fish and birds too).
I think pet stores that carry exotic pets like lizards ,snakes and tropical fish and birds, should have specialized training for the person that is put in charge of the exotic pet section(especially the reptiles)and pay this person more and try not to over whelm them with other pet store duties.I specifically mention lizards and snakes because they seem to be the most neglectic pets in the store. And if you see neglectic animals of any kind in a pet store ,zoo, or any where else ,be sure to notify the authories to the situation. Remeber reptiles like all pets, need love too!

Reptile Cages

Okay let me iterrate this again because 2 friends mine didnt seem to understand about useing cages to house constrictor snakes. If you decide to house your pet snake in a cage, and your snake is a constrictor, make sure the pets cage is very strong and the frame is extremly strudy.Constrictors are very strong and have substantial weight,.the pets cage frame work should be reinforced. If you dont know how to build one, dont fake it!.Go to a pet store that carries reptile cages and buy it.if you dont your python or boa constrictor will probably break the cage.remenber when a python or boa constrictor becomes grown a flimsy wooden framed cage will be no match for them.buy a durable cage or glass viewing terrarium.

Health Care for Snakes

Routine veterinary care for newly acquired snakes is highly suggested.Your veterinary can your pets snakes best friend next to you. Many of the parasites infesting ball pythons and other reptiles can be transmitted to humans and other reptiles.Left untreated could actaully kill your pet snake or any other reptiles that may contract the parasites.Adult mites are tiny reddish brown dots barely bigger than the period at the end of this sentence. Mites usally accur due to poor liveing conditions.so clean your pet snakes liveing area fairly regularly.
Snakes, including ball pythons, should routinely shed is one piece, from snout (including spectacles) to tail-tip. If a snake does not shed cleanly, it is a sign that something is not right, either with the snake or with its environment. If the snake sheds in flakes take your pet to a vet who has experience with reptiles. Please remember, like all pets, snakes are dependant on thier owners to maintain thier health and well being.

A brief Look At Snake Evolution

Snakes first evolved from lizards about 100 million years ago during the late Cretaceous period(this about the time that king of lizards appeared,no not godzilla i mean the Tyrannosaurus rex )and at that time they were very small like a worm.about 65 million years ago, the world's climate began to change and with the disapearance of the large dinosaurs gave the smaller reptiles a chance to thrive.and 50 to 35 million years ago, basal Macrostomatans appeared these where the first ancestors of the constrictors we now know and love(well atleast my daughter and i do:)) .Well there is a breif history of snake evolution.and remember ,"SNAKES NEED LOVE TOO! www.reptilerooms.com the ultimate online community

Boa Constrictors!

Today im going to cover the Red Tail boa constrictor. Red-tailed Boa or boa constrictor ,is a species of boa constrictor. The boa is the 2nd largest species of snake after the Anoconda. The Red tailed boa is my favorite type of boa constrictor because its an absolutely beautiful snake with a nice skin colours and patteren. The largest known boa is in the San Diego Zoo and is 14.5 foot long female and the longest boa ever caught was 18.5 feet long. But most in captivety are between 5 to 12 feet.Native to the tropical forests of Central and South America. Boa constrictors may forage in the trees but they are mainly perfer to stand on the ground.
The red tail boa have an beautiful and interesting pattern of brown to reddish-brown or black "saddles" of color on a lighter background color which can range through white, golden, grey or brownish, pink, with a reddish brown tail.(i love the tan with reddish pattern.)in general they live between 20-30 years of age.when a boa constrictor is raised in captivety does become some what docile but still is more aggressive than a ball python, and boas have been know to accidently strike thinking the handlers hand is prey.boas are none venomous and in general are hardy and make fairly good pets on the whole. But once again if you have children i perfer the ball python.

Snake Houseing

When houseing your pet snake you must consider the size of the snake and the best enviroment that is suited for your pet snake.Obviously most boa constrictorS grow to a great length and size.So with a pet boa you will a much larger terrarium, vivarium,or cage, wich ever you choose to use. Many pet snake owners choose the wooden terraria with the steel meshing or glass viewing panels and wooden frame. This type of cage is very popular becasuse its fairly easy to build and you can build it to your specifications and to fit the area you plan on keeping the snake. But its very important that the structure of the cage is very solid because boas and pythons are very strong. Also make ther is no areas or spaces where the snake can escape from,Rember snakes can contort thier bodies to fit threw very small openings. Well i did something dumb the other day.ididnt latch my snakes cage and it escaped.uve turned my house upside down looking for the snake but couldnt find it anywhere:(. My daughter is heart broken i ve laid out some food for it hopeing it will get hungry but balll pythons can go months without eating and it might not even be in the house by now.(they are good at finding escape routes).

Snake Care

Ball Pythons and snakes in general dont require alot of maintenace , but do need some specialized care. You do need to get a place to house your pet snake. You have consider size of your snake and the type of enviorment that is best suited for your pet snake.I perfer aquarium over cages ,but have seen large snakes in cages
rather than a aquarium
(just make sure it cant fit threw the cage mesh or bars because snakes are great escape artists.)make sure your pet snakes houseing is well ventalated and is secure.pythons and boa constrictors are known for poping lids to thier aquariums, remember constrictors are very strong all muscle lol.My brothers boa constrictor actually would knock a 20lb weight off the lid to get out of its tank.i kept telling him to get one the locks lol.ball pythons generally need the temperture to be between 77-88 degrees dureing the day and 68-73 degrees dureing the night.you should get a temperture gauge and humity gauge for your terrarium.you shouldnt keep the temperture the same at night as day time because the snake needs that cycle in temperature.i recomend a heating pad and not a heating rock because heating rocks can cause the snake to get a burn.most reptile need a uv light,it hasnt been proven its needed for the ball python but i use one just in case.(i want to keep my daughters snake happy:) make sure you use asorbant bedding shredded news paper or wood shaveing should do.make sure you have a water bowl for the snake.do not have the humidity to high for ball pythons .unlike alot of snakes you dont have to moisten the snake skin by misting or other means.ball pythons are more suited to arid climates.when a sbake is young you should baby mice called pinkies. these are frozen baby mice.a live mouse could bite and injure a young snake and its very to store just put the snake pet food(baby mouse ) in your freezer. Most pet stores carry them prepackaged and already frozen and they are very inexspensive.Ball pythons are natorious for being iratic eaters.somes times goin months without eating.(unlike most snakes that like to feed 2-4 times a month.well thats it for now and remember snakes need love too!:) Save up to 25% at 1800PetMeds - America's Largest Pet Pharmacy

Ball Python and Other Snakes

Ball Pythons, Python regius (also know as Royal Python in Europe) are a relatively small and docile specie of snake, which are native to western and west central africa They are called 'Ball Pythons' because, when frightened, they coil around and puttheir head and into a ball.
Ball python hatchling are approximately 16-18 inchs long and at full grown are around 4-6 feet.
structurally the ball python is fairly average.flat broad head, round bodied, and its tail is kinda of shortage for a constritor snake.thier bellys tend to be a kind of pale white.the bacjk ground colours on its back and head tend to be black or greyish with brown or goldish patterned rings.
Ball pythons are in the same scientific family as other Boas and Pythons, as such they are constrictors. The term constrictor refers to their method of subduing food by coiling around the intended item, a small mammal, and suffocating it. and are active at night (nocturnal). They hunt at night with the help of their labial heat pits×, and their Jacobson's Organ×. at day timethey spend their time hiding in underground rodent burrows or termite mounds.(they keep hidden to avoid predators)
In general, ball pythons make good pets because they are docile non strikeing snakes with no teeth.(my four year little girl loves her ball python and she named it tinkerbell lol)
Ball pythons(and snakes in general)tend to live a long time.the oldest ball python in captivety lived to 47 years old.so prepare for a long term commitment if you decide to own one.well im gong to stop here, next will talk about handling the ball python and its eating habits.and remember most snakes are non venomous, and not dangerous.but quiet a few do bite and are aggressive.and some wild snakes are very dangerous and venomous so avoid contact with wild snakes if you do not know anything about that type of snake and handle all snakes with care.
